RDC2017: Anna Chuinyshena wins gold in women’s 10m platform

4 May 2017, Thursday

Day 2 of the Russian Diving Championships featured only 2 disciplines. The men’s springboard event was followed by the women’s 10m platform event. Anna Chuinyshena, young diver from Sain Petersburg, took crown in the women’s 10m platform. Irina Astashkina, Penza, finished second (294, 60), and Yulia Timoshinina, Moscow, claimed bronze (282, 80).

Yulia Timoshinina, World Championships and the Rio 2016 Olympics participant, built up an early lead after the preliminaries and semifinals, but couldn’t make it at the finals, the diver admitted.

“I couldn’t calm my nerves. I felt like I got out of bed on the wrong side, I’ve made some silly mistakes. I just need to forget about this fail now and move on. I have other competitions here, so I’ll try to show what I can and to prepare for the World Championships. Life goes on, nothing terrible happened, I just need to draw right conclusions and continue to work.”

Silver medallist Irina Astashkina was amazed by her result and couldn't keep her emotions during the award ceremony.

“Hard to describe my feelings, I’m so happy! It is so cool to get the title of the Russian Diving Championships, it’s such an honour. Today I’m really pleased with my performance, I’ve done everything I had to. It’s a huge success for me, but I shouldn't rest on my laurels for long.”

“I’ve been to Kazan just 5 months ago but I feel I’ve already changed a lot. I’ve become a more mature, experienced and confident diver. Now I know what a big victory is and how to pursue it. In the meantime, Kazan doesn't change. It remains as beautiful as it was.” the diver from Penza added.

The gold winner, on the contrary, was very reserved about her title, although this was her first victory at the national championships.

“There is no doubt I am happy about the title, this is my 5th medal at the national championships, but I've never won the gold before. I used to finish second, took medals in team events and synchro duets but never managed to claim gold in individuals. It’s good I’ve done it now.”

“I don’t think there’s a secret to success. I know the Kazan venue pretty good, I’ve performed here already and my diving programme has been trained for more than a year. I’ve just pulled myself together and showed the maximum I had, committing as few mistakes as possible. I trained a lot to win the gold medal at the Russian Championships, so now I can have some rest. There are still 1m synchro and team events I have to dive in Kazan, but there will be no more pressure on me so I’m going to perform on my own pleasure.” says Anna Chuinyshena, the student of the “Nevskaya Volna” sports school.
