The congress’ plenary session opened in the Tatar Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre.One hundred and forty five journalists from Russia and other countries have come to Kazan, to report the work of the fifth World Congress of Tatars, held in the Tatar Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre. Over 100 journalists represent Tatarstan, while 45 have come from Russian regions and near and far abroad countries.
A broadcast of the plenary meeting has been arranged for the press. The atmosphere in the press centre is very warm, many journalists are wearing the Tatar scullcaps, tubeteikas. Tatar songs are being played before the anniversary meeting begins.
A total of 800 delegates (423 from 61 Russian constituent, 218 compatriots from 34 countries and 150 from Tatarstan), as well as over 300 guests, are gathered in the hall.
The fifth congress of Tatars is held in the 20th year since its establishment. It was in 1992 first convened by a decree issued by the President of Tatarstan and was subsequently assembled every five years.
An extensive programme has been prepared for the delegates and visitors, including a plenary session and three workshops themed Ways of Tatar Nation Development, Role of History, Culture and National Education in Forming Tatar People’s Mentality, as well as Tatar Informational Space: Reality and Prospects.
A global Tatar social network, Tatar Ile, will be officially presented and launched at the congress. The congress’ press service has said the delegates will be offered an extensive cultural programme as well, which includes trips to Tatatarstan regions, visits to theatres and museums, as well as guided tours.
