Official events marking 140 years since birth of Fedor Shaliapin to take place in Kazan

1 February 2013, Friday

Museums have this year prepared a varied and extensive programme.

Russia in February marks what would have been the 140th anniversary of Fedor Shaliapin, whose creative legacy has become a significant part of the world musical culture. Fedor Shaliapin is known to have been born in Kazan and raised in the “Kazan environment” and according to local theatrical traditions.

Tatarstan National Museum and Literature Memorial Museum after Gorky have invited Kazan residents and visitors to an annual programme of events named A Tribute to F. Shaliapin.

The Gorky museum has since 1968 run the first and only display dedicated to our compatriot, F. Shaliapin, presenting unique materials given to the museum by the singer’s daughter, Irina Fedorovna.

Various events have for many years been held with active participation of the Shaliapin Society. This year, when the Gorky literature memorial museum is being reconstructed, visitors wishing to see the festive programme are welcome to come to the Volga region’s largest and oldest museum, Tatarstan National Museum, whose branch is the Gorky museum.

Museum employees have this year prepared a varied and eventful programme of festivities. On 13 February, a traditional church service will be held at the Epiphany Cathedral, where on 2 (14) February, 1873, Fedor Shaliapin had been christened. An official meeting near the monument to Shaliapin will follow, every comer being given an invitation allowing free-of-charge visits of all the festive events, on 13 February held in the Tatarstan National Museum.

The museum invites all the meeting’s participants to a free walking guided tour, as well as a short tour of a display timed to coincide with Shaliapin’s anniversary, held within a Nota Bene project.
