Rubin of Kazan has within the UEFA Europa League’s 1/16th final triumphed in Spain over Atletico of Madrid. The Kazan team sent two unreciprocated goals into the tournament’s reigning champion’s net.
Rubin opened the scoring as early as 5 minutes into the game, Karadeniz completing a pass made by Rondon, 0:1.
Late in part one, Rubin were left a minority, Roman Sharonov being removed from the pitch for a foul.Part two was extremely difficult and tense for Rubin, the smaller number of men most of the time having to fend off Spaniards’ offensives.
Rubin, however, coped well with the task and close to the end of part two doubled their advantage. In the 94th minute, the hosts’ goalkeeper moved into the Kazan team’s half of the pitch, in hopes of bringing about the game, which was a fatal mistake. Orbaiz led a counter-offensive aimed at the empty net and struck from the rival’s penalty line, 0:2.
Rubin thus won over one of the Old World’s best clubs and has quite a few chances of making it into the UEFA Europa League’s 1/8th final. The reciprocal match is due in a week.
Atletico Madrid (Spain) – Rubin (Russia) 0:2 (0:1).
