Tatarstan’s sights could become Russia’s symbol

The Rossia 1 TV channel in conjunction with the Russain Geographic Society on 25 March to 29 September holds a Russia 10 competition, to reveal country’s ten main places of interest. As of 1 April, the Raifa Monastery was among the top ten Volga Federal District sights, ranking seventh.

The Russia 10 project’s purpose is to select ten new visual symbols of Russia through a public vote. All of them will be made miniature replicas of when building a landscape park Rossia in the Moscow region. The park will be located on a space of 300 hectares in the Domodedovo region.

Over 700 cultural, architectural and landscape assets have so far been included in the voting at the Rossia 10 website. The competition includes several stages. Any user can without registration enter the project’s site and vote.

Tatarstan is represented by the Raifa Monastery, Mother of God Monastery, Kul Sharif mosque, Kazan Kremlin, Yelabuga reserve museum, Suyumbike Tower, Bolgar ancient settlement, Sviyazhsk Assumption Monastery, Tatarstan National Museum and the Millennium Square.

As of 1 April, the Bashkir hills Shikhany are at the top of the list, followed by the Kungur cave in the Perm region, while the second runner-up is the Stalin’s bunker in Samara.

A total of 5,387 people have voted for the Raifa Monastery.
