Kachalov Theatre to show favourite plays as part of Cultural Universiade

3 July 2013, Wednesday

Residents and guests of Kazan will be able to see the performances from July 2 to 16.

The theatre’s artistic director Alexander Slavutsky, People's Artist of the Russian Federation, has decided to open this special screening with the comedy Dear Citizens. The play is a combination of Mikhail Zoschenko’s three small comedies: Roots of Capitalism, Wedding, Crime and Punishment. These are humorous yet sorrowful stories, sketches from the lives of residents of a communal apartment who love, argue, marry, divorce, build their livelihoods, escape disaster and search for true happiness. The heroes of the comedy are sure to resonate with every member of the audience.

Tomorrow, on July 3, audiences will be dazzled by the solo performance Last Day, based on the works of Marina Tsvetaeva and performed by Svetlana Romanova, who is a National Artist of Tatarstan and recipient of the State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan named after Gabdulla Tukay. The play has become a sort of reflection on the life of the poetess, her fate and her work.

Other performances to be put on by the Kachalov performers as part of the Cultural Universiade include plays based on the works of A.Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and F.Dostoyevsky’s Uncle’s Dream.

Founded in 1791, the theatre is one of the oldest in Russia. In 1948, the theatre was named after the National Artist of the USSR Vasily Kachalov, who began his artistic career here. In 2005, the theatre inaugurated a monument dedicated to Kachalov in its atrium lobby.
