Russian team wins gold and silver in race walking at World Championships

14 August 2013, Wednesday
At World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Elena Lashmanova, 2012 London Olympics champion, won 20 kilometer race, whilst Anisya Kirdyapkina, Kazan Universiade winner, came second.

Lashmanova and Kirdyapkina took the lead several kilometers before the finished line and competed for the gold with each other.

Vera Sokolova from Russia got to the third position at the end of the race, but her technique failed her like at the Kazan Universiade a month ago. Judges made her a third warning and set her down 500 meters before the finish line.

This is Russia’s second gold at this World Championships. Race walker Alexander Ivanov came first in men’s 20 kilometer race the day before yesterday.
