Russian Short Course Championship: Svetlana Chimrova sets record in women's 100m butterfly. Part 8

21 November 2013, Thursday

A touch on the wall decided the outcome of the men's 100m freestyle final. The Volgograd athlete Nikita Konovalov beat the Olympic medallist Sergey Fesikov by 0.08 seconds (46.70 vs. 46.78). Evgeny Lagunov earned bronze (46.86).

"It was just a mere luck - I was first to touch the wall and won less than 0.1 seconds. I did not expect to win, I thought I will place third. My competitors had shown better results than me. But it was a lottery game, the same as in the 50m event, and the three of us gambled who will be first to touch the wall," Nikita Konovalov commented on his performance. "I've seen the programme of the European Championships, and we've already discussed it with my coach. Unfortunately, I will not be able to take part in the 100m crawl event. That's why I tried to show my best result and I did it. It's a pity that, as it turns out, for the European Championships I will have to select either the 100m crawl event or two 100m events - backstroke and butterfly. We also consider the 50m backstroke and butterfly."
