Photo exhibition opens at Universiade Village for Victory Day

Preparations for Victory Day at the Universiade Village began long before May 9 as several events at once were timed to coincide with this great holiday. The festive event dedicated to the 69th anniversary of the Victory at the Great Patriotic War was held on May 7. On that day all residents of the Universiade Village, veterans and officials gathered at the student campus to remember once again the time of military glory and honour the memory of those who died at the war.

The meeting was held with the support of Kazan Federal University and the Students' Association and began with the laying of flowers at the Walk of Glory on Prospekt Pobedy Street. After that Universiade Village Mayor Farid Abdulganiev and veterans opened a photo exhibition, titled 'Stills of War', that was organised by students. Heroes of War Heroes of steel shots - Grandfathers of the students residing in the Universiade Village became the main characters in the photos presented at the exhibition.

"Dear veterans, guests and residents of the Village," Farid Abdulganiyev said to the audience. "Victory Day is one of the most important traditions of the Village that we are trying to preserve. This year we are opening an exhibition to which students from many regions of Russia have contributed. We are very pleased to once again show how proud we are of the feat accomplished by our soldiers, heroes of the Great Patriotic War. The 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great War is right around the corner, and we start our preparations for its celebration as early as today."

"We are very happy to be here - in students' home - today. Just a year ago, we wished you to stage a successful Universiade and you lived up to our expectations, you did everything great," said veterans in their thank-you speech. After the opening of the exhibition, a tea party was arrranged for them, during which they could have a chat with each other and with students. And later on, in the evening, a concert was held in the Universiade Village to celebrate the forthcoming Victory Day. The event was opened by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Garifullin, who congratulated the audience on the upcoming holiday. Welcoming remarks were made and The veterans thanked the organisers for the wonderful festivities.

The students prepared an extensive concert programme for this evening. The concert ended with fireworks display and a minute of silence.
