14th world wushu championships conclude in Kazan

The 14th World Wushu Championships wrapped up today in Kazan. Team China topped the podium in the medal standings. 

Men’s Taolu 

On the final day of the championships, ten sets of medals were contested in the men’s and women’s taolu events. Yaowen ZHANG of China earned victory in the men’s Qiangshu. Weng Son WONG and Wai Kin YEAP of Malaysia finished second and third consecutively. Pavel MURATOV of Russia showed the fourth best result and missed out on a podium. 

Tomohiro ARAYA of Japan claimed the title in the men’s Taijijian event, followed by Yu-yeh CHUANG of Chinese Taipei, who took silver and Tak Yan Samuei HUI of Hong Kong who settled for the third place. Ivan KRASNOBAEV of Russia finished seventh with 0.21 points behind the third-place finisher. 

Jun Hua HUANG of Macao grabbed gold in the men’s Nandao event. Khac Dat CAO of Vietnam and Po Wei LAI of Chinese Taipei took silver and bronze respectively. Russia’s Dmitry TIUNOV didn’t make it to the top ten. 

Asian wushu athletes’ winning streak was broken by France’s Leo BENOUAICH, who posted a confident win in the men’s Xingyiquan event. He was head and shoulders above his nearest rivals – Pui Seng CHEONG of Macao and Christoph HUYNH of Germany. 

In the men’s Duilian event, the top podium was claimed by the Iranian team who managed to outclass the Korean and Ukrainian athletes.

Russia's Vladimir  MAKSIMOV snatched victory in the men’s Shuangdao event. He added the first gold medal to the Russian team’s medal count.

“We lacked a little luck at the beginning of the tournament; we claimed silver and bronze and I’m happy that our team finally managed to win gold in the taolu event,” Vladimir Maksimov said after the medal ceremony. 

Women’s Taolu

The Malaysian wushu athletes were unbeatable in the women’s Duilian. The US team and Team Macao ended up on the second and third places.

In the women’s Shuangjian, gold was earned by Tianhui ZHENG of Hong Kong. Ukraine’s Liudmyla TEMNA grabbed silver whereas Iran’s Hanieh RAJABI rounded out the podium in third. 

The women's Baguazhang final ended with Chinese Jing DUAN’s triumph. Suijin CHEN of Hong Kong and Zeynep Makbule AKYUZ of Turkey climbed the second and third places on the podium.

And finally, in the women’s Gunshu event, Indonesia’s Felda Elvira SANTOSO snatched gold, followed by Risa IKEUCHI of Japan and Xuxu LIU of Hong Kong who placed second and third consecutively. Russia’s Sandra KONSTANTINOVA finished fifth.

Therefore, Team China posted a confident win in the overall taolu medal standings with 8 gold medals. Hong Kong’s wushu athletes have a total of 11 medals, 5 of which are gold. Indonesia and South Korea took 7 medals each (2 of which are gold), Team Malaysia hauled 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. The Russian national team collected one gold, one silver and one bronze.

In the overall sanda medal standings, China and Iran placed first, winning seven medals each. The Russian national team has two gold, one silver and one bronze medals.

The taolu finals were followed by the official closing ceremony of the tournament, where the IWUF flag was handed over to the organiser of the next World Wushu Championships that will be hosted in Shanghai (China) in 2019. Vice President of the International Wushu Federation, Anthony Goh, thanked the athletes for their impressive and emotionally charged performances and wished them good luck in the future. He also mentioned the top-class management of the Kazan tournament and thanked the organisers for their efforts.
