New records are being set as the Russian Short Course Swimming Championships 2017 unfolds. The penultimate competition day didn't feature many surprises, however it brought once again new records and bright races.
Men's 4x50m relay
The competition day started with the men's 4x50 freestyle relay event. The favourites of the event, swimmers from Saint Petersburg, predictably took the crown, event though the Moscow competitors were ahead them most of the time.
1. Kaluga Oblast (Sergey Fesikov, Mikhail Vekovishev, Georg Gutmann, Andrey Arbuzov) – 1:26.33.
2. Moscow-1 (Andrey Zhilkin, Artem Lobuzov, Mikhail Dovgalyuk, Daniil Pasynkov) – 1:27.95.
3. Saint Petersburg-2 (Roman Shevlyakov, Alexsandr Prybitok, Vyacheslav Prudnikov, Andrey Savin) – 1:28.61.
"Relay for me is as important as the individual events. I think we swam well but there is always something to improve. The line up for Copenhagen is not clear yet, but I guess the Russian team will be quite competitive," said Sergey Fesikov after the race.
Women's 100m breaststroke
Everyone was waiting for the famous Russian swimmer Yuliya Yefimova, but she had to pull out from the tournament due to the relapse of the shoulder injury. The absence of Yulia only sharpened the competition: 5 athletes clocked by 1.06, and 2 of them secured the berths at the championships in Copenhagen.
1. Natalia Ivaneeva, Volgograd Oblast – 1:05.10
3. Daria Chikunova, Saint Petersburg - 1:05.47
3. Maria Temnikova, Saint Petersburg - 1:05.79
Men's 50m backstroke
The 5th world and Europe junior record was set today by Kliment Kolesnikov from Moscow. For the talented young swimmer another gold represents for once more the hopes for the success at the Europeans in Copenhagen.

"I didn;t expect myself so many medals and records. I can't believe it! Something incredible happened to me here, in Kazan. Anyway, it gets harder with every day, the fatigue gets over. I competed well every time and qualified in the events I wouldn't even think of. Now we will think with the coaches of the best way to perform the programme in Copenhagen without getting exhausted too fast. The 200m event will be the major one. This is my mark event, thanks to it I set the new national record. I hope I will succeed," shared his thoughts the new record holder.
"Parents, youngsters, swimmers - everyone supports me. Thanks to everyone who cheered for me and who still does. I wouldn't make it without such a team," he added.
The new national record set by Rozaliya Nasretdinova in the women's 50m freestyle should also be mentioned. The new record clocks 23.64.
