On the eve of International Volunteer Day, the final of the Legacy of the FIFA World Cup 2018 RussiaTM Contest was held at the Skolkovo Innovation Centre. Volunteer candidates who presented the most interesting projects to organisers were given the unique opportunity to implement them in their home cities with assistance of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Local Organising Committee (LOC).
The ‘Green 2018 World Cup project’ presented by Dmitry Spiridonov, the teacher of history and social science from Kazan, was recognised as the best one in the ecological projects category. The project’s purpose is to help increase ecological awareness among volunteers of the 2018 FIFA World Cup RussiaTM in the host city of Kazan. According to authors of the Kazan project, participants of the volunteer programme will be able to check their level of ecological awareness by taking the Green 2018 World Cup tests at several stations: EcoMarket (the ability to make purchases with smaller harm for the nature); EcoDom (the ability to turn a house into an eco-friendly, economic and healthy place); Divide (the ability to divide garbage into fractions); Yashel Tatarstan (acquaintance with natural resources of the Republic of Tatarstan); How Long (a test that helps to find out how long it takes for this or that type of garbage to decay); Quiz (a test of volunteers’ general knowledge of ecology). The participants who have successfully passed the tests and received a Green 2018 World Cup pin will be able to give their assistance to separate waste collection during the 2018 FIFA World Cup RussiaTM. Plastic bottles collected during the 2018 FIFA World Cup will be used to create an installation in the shape of a football with the diameter of 7 metres, which will be later recycled.
The finalists’ projects will be implemented in their home cities with the assistance of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ LOC and will help to make the Host Cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ even more comfortable, attractive and interesting.
