According to Tatarstan Taekwondo Federation about 3 thousand people take taekwondo lessons in RT. It is especially popular in Naberezhnye Chelny, Kazan and Nizhnekamsk.
Each country has a right to be represented by 4 sportsmen in Olympic Games. That is 2 women and 2 men. Qualification Tournament consists of two tours: the World Tournament and Continental Tournament.
World Qualification Tournament was held in Baku between June 30 and July 3, 2011. Russian taekwondo sportsmen were pretty successful there. They won two Olympic licenses. One of them was taken by the champion of Europe and double bronze winner of the world championship Anastasiya Baryshnikova. She became third in the category more than 67 kg. And the second medal was conquered by Gaji Umarov. He became second in the category more than 80 kg. In the final he was defeated by Don Min Cha from South Korea.
Thus Russian taekwondo sportsmen have already won the half of the possible quota. They have European Qualification Tournament which will be held in their home country – in the city of Kazan – to gain two more medals.
