FINA diving World series 2018: favourites to qualify for the final on day 2

5 May 2018, Saturday

The FINA Diving World Series is in full play. Day 2 of the competition programme contained the men’s 3m springboard, women’s and mixed 10m platform events. The preliminaries of the first two disciplines ran during the morning session.

North Korea’s Mi Rae Kim won the first women’s final with the score of 359.65 points for five dives, thus leaving Malaysia’s Pandelela Pamg three points behind. Russia’s Yulia Timoshinina finished third earning 351.1 points for six dives and securing a berth in the final. The competition in the second final turned out to be rather tough, as three points separated the winner from the runner-up. Ren Qian of China topped the podium (361.35), and Melissa Wu of Australia achieved the second place. Kim Kuk Hyang, the diver from North Korea, scored 350.90 points, thus getting qualified for the final. These six athletes will continue to compete for gold of the Kazan leg of the World Series. The women’s 10m platform final will take place during the evening session of Day 2.

The men’s semifinals in the 3m springboard stirred no sensation, either. In one of them a 25-point advantage guaranteed Russia’s Ilia Zakharov a confident victory. China’s Cao Yuan (441.40) and Canada’s Francois Imbeau-Dulac (439) were second and third, respectively. Oleg Kolodiy, the Ukrainian diver, will miss the final. He lost 40 points to the Canadian. The host team has the majority of the representatives in the final. Zakharov’s teammate, Evgeny Kuznetsov, grabbed the third spot in the semifinal (410.45) and got through into the final round, as well. The winner of the semifinal, Xie Siyi of Team China (518.2), and the holder of the second position, Daniel Goodfellow of Team Great Britain (415.9), cruised into the final, too. The final of this discipline will run tonight.
