Filipino chess player So becomes Universiade champion in Kazan

Wesley So from the Philippines is the winner of the Chess tournament at the Universiade in Kazan.

The matches of the 9th and final round were played on Monday. So, playing black, drew the game against Zaven Andriasian. The match ended on the 28th move. Wesley So, Russians Evgeny Alekseev, Maxim Matlakov, and Sanan Sjugirov, China’s Chao Li, Qun Ma, Jianchao Zhou, Poland’s Jachek Tomczak and Andriasian scored 6.5 points each.

The medals were decided by additional criteria: gold went to So, silver to Andriasian, and bronze to Li. Matlakov took 5th flace, Alekseev came 7th, and Siugirov 9th. Another representative of Russia, Dmitry Andreikin, came in 14th with 6 points.
