London remains in top position, and has even extended its lead over the second-placed city, thanks to its Olympic and Paralympic Games legacy programme, and its success in attracting major sports events including: the IRB Rugby World Cup (2015); the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships (2016); cycling’s UCI Track World Championships (2016); the IAAF World Athletics Championships (2017); and field hockey’s FIH Women’s World Cup (2018).
Moscow leapfrogged Rio de Janeiro into second place. This year Russia's capital already hosted the IAAF World Championships, and is also set to stage: the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships (2014); the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships (2015); ice hockey’s IIHF World Championships (2016); the World Modern Pentathlon Championships (2016); and matches of the Fifa World Cup, including the final (2018).
