The ceremony in Lausanne was also attended by Vladimir Leonov, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Republic of Tatarstan, who delivered a welcome speech in which he elaborated on major aspects of the preperations for the FINA World Championships. Once again the event participants mentioned the significance of the tournament that is going to be hosted in Kazan and stressed how unique it is. For his part, Vladimir Leonov invited the FINA Bureau members to visit Kazan during the competitions.
The ceremony was conducted by the Chairman of the FINA Technical Water Polo Committee Gianni Lonzi. The men's tournament groups were formed by Matthew Dunn, a former Olympic freestyle and medley swimmer from Australia, while the women's tournament draws were announced by Margo Mountjoy, a Canadian representative and FINA Bureau Member.
In the men's tournament, the following groups were drawn. Croatia, Brazil, Canada, China were put into Group A. Greece, the USA, Italy and Russia were drawn into Group B. Group C will include South Africa, Hungary, Argentina and Kazakhstan. Serbia, Japan, Montenegro and Australia are going to compete against each other in Group D.
In the women's tournament, the results of the draw were as follows. Group A will include Canada, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Spain. Among teams in Group B are Australia, South Africa, Greece and the Netherlands. Brazil, Japan, the USA, Italy will compete in Group C while Hungary, Russia, China and France will face off against each other in Group D.
