WMXCC2016: We do not intend to rest on our laurels, says US team coach

18 October 2016, Tuesday

More matches were contested in the afternoon of the fifth competition day at the World Mixed Curling Championship in Kazan.

Austria-France, 10-5

In case of victory, Team France could catch up with the Austrians in the group standings but the French curlers' hope were scattered after the third round, which ended 2-7 in their disfavour. It became France’s fourth defeat at the tournament whereas Austria now has three wins.

Germany-Estonia, 9-1

The German team continues its winning streak in Kazan after scoring a huge win over Estonia.

“The first half of the game was quite successful; we fully dominated the first four ends but then started to lose concentration and it was a bad thing. But we still won and we are happy with this fact. It only prepared us for the future battle and future matches. The more we play, the better we become,” Andy Kapp, the skip of the German national team, explained.

Switzerland-Croatia, 10-2

Team Switzerland posted an overwhelming win over Croatia who managed to collect only two points. The former team stole the initiative despite being on a losing side after three ends, 1-2.

“We are pleased with today’s game; everything we’ve been trying to achieve worked out. Besides, our opponents from Croatia showed a good performance; they did especially well in the beginning of the match and unsettled us a little bit. But at the end of the match we had the game the way we wanted it and we felt more comfortable. The ice, staff – everything is top-class and our team is happy to be here!” said Michelle Jaeggi, the lead of the Swiss national team.

Sweden-England, 7-5

The Swedes had to face the strong resistance from Team England who put up a good fight and kept their end up until the final round. The Scandinavians celebrated their fourth victory at the Kazan tournament.

Andorra-USA, 1-11

The young Andorran team stood little chance against the experienced US curlers who seek not just to make it into the playoffs but to end up among the top finishers of the tournament.

“Our team played well and accomplished everything I’ve asked them to. Without making practically no mistakes during the match, we were able to win a victory. Well, we’ll keep competing and show everything we are capable of. We will try to go as far as possible. We do not intend to rest on our laurels,” the coach of the US national team, Robert Walstad, commented on his team’s performance.
