WMXCC2016: in curling, millimetres separate victory from defeat, team Hungary say

19 October 2016, Wednesday

Matches continued on the sixth competition day of the World Mixed Curling Championship in Kazan.

Finland-Ireland, 6-2

The Finnish curlers were fighting for a playoff berth and couldn’t afford a loss in this match.

“We played a good match but our failure at the start of the tournament is still taking a toll on us. We must win tomorrow and hope that other playoff candidates will make mistakes or that we’ll play a tiebreak. But even if we fail to get into the playoffs, we will not leave for home right away. We will have some time to do sights; there are so many tourist attractions that we want to see,” said the fourth of the Finish national team, Jere Sullanmaa.

Hungary-England, 7-2

The victory over England gave Hungary a chance to qualify for the quarterfinal and the first place in the group whereas the English curlers will face a tough battle for a playoff spot.

“Thank you for your congratulations; we did great today. We didn’t invent anything new; our goal is to get into the house as many stones as possible without letting the opponents get their stones in the tie zone. It was simple: today we managed to make all our key shots whereas the English skip was not that lucky. In curling, millimetres separate a victory from a defeat,” said the Hungarian curler, Dorottya Palancsa.

Slovakia-Sweden, 4-8

Slovakia’s chances to qualify from the group vanished after this match whereas the Swedes secured a spot in the playoffs.

“We are glad that we won; it was an important match for us. We are looking forward to the match against Hungary; it will be a battle for the first place in the group, for a quarterfinal berth. Quite possibly we will have a day off – it’s extremely important given the tough competition schedule,” admitted Jennie Waahlin, the third of Team Sweden.

“The Swedish team is a royal team; our main colour is yellow. That’s why we have no goal other than to win gold. Although Russia, Canada, Germany are just as good,” she added jokingly.

Belgium-Latvia, 2-10

If Belgium hit rock bottom in the group, Latvia guaranteed itself a playoff berth by winning this match.

“We are happy with the victory but the upcoming match against the US team will be a turning point for us. It will be an extremely tough match but we believe in ourselves and are only motivated to win. There’s no alternative,” Antra Zvane, the lead of the Latvian team, shared in her interview.

“Today our opponents let us dominate the game; we’ve accomplished everything we planned. It always feels good to win; we enjoy our victory,” said the skip for the Latvian team, Ansis Regza.

Canada-Korea, 5-3

By winning the match against Team Korea, the Canadians once again proved their curling powerhouse status. It’s their sixth victory at the Kazan tournament.

“The recipe for our success is constant practice; we try to have them as often and as many as possible. That’s the reason why we do so well at the tournament, plus we use chances that our opponents provide us with. We had little problems in today’s match but a few of our peels were too strong but as for the rest everything was perfect,” shared Team Canada’s second, Brad Thiessen.
