The evening programme of the fourth competition day of the Russian Short Course Swimming Championships in Kazan was headlined by the men’s 50m backstroke final.
Olympic medallist and world champion, Evgeny Rylov (Moscow) finished the race at 23,32 to win gold in the men’s 50m backstroke event. Andrey Shabasov of Saint Petersburg climbed the second place on the podium (23,46). Stanislav Donets of the Ulyanovsk Oblast took bronze (23,62).
The men’s 50m butterfly final saw Alexander Popokov (Saint Petersburg) touch the wall at 22,57 to grab gold. Another St Petersburg representative, Daniil Pakhomov, came second (22,93), setting the national junior record. Pavel Pakhomov of Moscow rounded out the podium in third (22,95).
Russia’s best swimmers did their best to break the national record set by Olympic silver medallist and world champion, Evgeny Korotyshkin, in 2009 in Berlin (GER). But the record remained unbeaten.
