A Chinese diver was the strongest in the second final of Day 4 at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Kazan. Huiling Chen took gold in the 3m springboard (Group A Girls) with 445 points.
According to the Chinese diver, she has been nervous. “It’s a special honour to represent your country at an international competition, to sing the anthem and to watch your flag being raised,” Huiling Chen explained. “The Chinese team has a big delegation; we are all like one family; we support each other and believe in our common success. The competition is tough but we are not afraid of anyone.”
It’s the second gold medal for the Chinese team – Xia Bingqing earned gold in the platform event (Group B Girls) the day before.
Melany Hernandez of Mexico climbed the second spot on the podium (441.75). Katherine Torrance of Great Britain settled for bronze with 433.65. Yesterday, the British diver also claimed gold in the 1m springboard.
Katherine Torrance was leading in the preliminary round but after failing her second dive she was not able to take the lead back.
For Melany Hernandez her silver medal came as a surprise. “Gold was within my grasp but second place at such a tournament is a great thing as well. There are a lot of strong divers here and I’m glad that I’m one of them now. My goal is to end up on the Olympic podium and I will train a lot to make my dream come true,” the silver medallist said.
