On the fifth competition day of the FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Kazan, Russian divers Ekaterina Nekrasova and Tatyana Stepanova collected 279.48 in the synchronised 3m springboard event and placed third on the podium.
"We are very happy; it was exremely tough to gain the first place at the worlds because it's only recently that we put together this programme and started to dive together," bronze medallist Ekaterina Nekrasova admitted. "Our coaches placed us together in one team at the last moment and we've been training together for only a month. It's the first time I competed at a major tournament and I was very nervous. I'm glad that eventually everything turned out well."
For Ekaterina Nekrasova, it was the third performance at the championships - earlier she had fought for medals in the individual and team events.
As for Tatyana Stepanova, she already took silver in the 1m springboard.
Junior divers of both age categories (Group A and B) competed in the synchro 3m springboard event.
Gold in the synchro 3m springboard was claimed by China's Chen Huiling, who the day before had climbed atop the podium in the idividual event, and Lingrui Liu. They earned 296.70 points.
"It's a great achievement that we won gold. I was not able to train for a long time because of my injury. I still haven't recovered yet," Lingrui Liu said. "I had to perform with pain in my ankle that's why we had little chance of winning. But thanks to our doctors and, coach and Huiling, we managed to win."
Jayah Mathews and Georgia Sheehan of Australia gained 286.50 points and grabbed silver.
