FINA WJDC 2016: Russia's Ruslan Ternovoy gets title in 3m springboard

3 December 2016, Saturday

Day 6 of the FINA World Junior Diving Championships started with the 3m springboard event (Group B Boys). Gold was claimed by Russia's Ruslan Ternovoy who collected 480.35 points.

Yang Ling of China won silver with 467.30 points. Ukraine's Nikita Krivopishin rounded out the podium in third (440.75).

Today the Russian diver had a perfect chance to turn the tables on Yang Ling for yesterday's performance in the platform event, where he had placed third whereas the Chinese athlete ended up first. After this morning's preliminary round, Ruslan Ternovoy was leading the pack, followed by Yang Ling. In the evening, the Russian managed to keep the lead and to earn gold.

"For me it's an unknown feeling - to stand on the podium and to listen to my home country's anthem. I became a world champion; it's awesome! I'm glad that I managed to beat Yang Ling," Ruslan said during his interview. "I knew that I'm better than him and now I've proved it."

As for Yang Ling, he collected the full set of medals at the tournament in Kazan: gold in the platform, silver in the 3m springboard and bronze in the team event.

"Second place is still a good result but, of course, I hoped to win gold," Yang Ling said after his performance. "Ruslan beat me here and I beat him in the platform. I'm looking forward to next competitions; we will compete against each other again. For now, we are even." The Chinese diver also added that beyond the swimming pool he's friends with Ruslan, they socialise and support each other.

After the final ended, Nikita Krivopishin couldn't believe that he had won. "I haven't been awarded the medal yet that's why I cannot fully understand that I had become a runner-up at a world championship," the bronze medal winner said before the medal ceremony. "I feel like I'm in a pleasant dream. It's a huge success for me and my country. I cannot say that I'm fully satisfied with myself because I failed some of my dives. It's a high-profile event and even a small flaw can prevent you from winning gold."

Another Russian diver, Grigory Ivanov, who also competed in the 3m springboard final, showed the sixth best result (413.60)
