The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay will become the longest in the history of the Olympic Winter Games and also among exclusively national relays, in terms of the distance that the Relay will cover.
According to the organisers, the route was designed to ensure that around 90 per cent of Russia's population will be within an hour of the Relay at some stage, allowing approximately 130 million residents to participate in the event.
The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay will continue its journey around Moscow on 7 and 8 October. In total, 493 Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame through the Russian capital, with celebrations taking place in Gorky Park, the Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrow Hills), the Luzhniki Stadium and Europe Square.
The Flame was delivered to Russia by a delegation headed by Dmitry Kozak, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Chernyshenko, the President of the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee, and Russia’s six-time Olympic speed skating champion Lidiya Skoblikova.
The grand welcome ceremony for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Flame was held on October 6 in Red Square, Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin lit a celebration cauldron to mark the start of the Olympic Torch Relay.
General Director of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate, Vladimir Leonov, became the Torchbearer for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay, which kicked off the day before in Moscow. Vladimir Leonov ran his leg of the Olympic Torch Relay along Kotelnicheskaya Embankment.
